The generation you'll find
The ninth-generation Malibu launched for 2016 and got a refresh for 2019. It has a big back seat and trunk for a midsize sedan, which is why families and commuters keep buying it.
Engines and transmissions
- 1.5L turbo (L, LS, LT, RS): the common engine. 2016–2018 models use a 6-speed automatic; 2019 and later use a CVT.
- 2.0L turbo (Premier, and the 2016–2018 2LT option): quicker, with an 8-speed (2016–2018) or 9-speed (2019+) automatic.
- Hybrid (2016–2019): uncommon on the used market.
On a test drive, the CVT should feel smooth with no shudder or slipping when you accelerate gently from a stop.
Auto stop/start
Most Malibus shut the engine off at red lights. That's normal. On a test drive, make sure it restarts smoothly and the AC keeps you comfortable while stopped. A weak battery can cause stop/start to stop working, so ask when the battery was replaced.

Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask a Chevrolet dealer about open campaigns for that exact car.
Test-drive checklist
- Cold start and a smooth idle.
- A highway stretch on I-45 or the NASA Parkway at 65+: no vibration or droning.
- Brakes: no pulsing in stop-and-go traffic.
- Infotainment, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and the backup camera.
- Trunk and spare-tire well: dry, with no signs of water.
