Kyle Larson dominated the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. He led a track-record 235 of 267 laps in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, retook the lead from Chase Briscoe with seven laps left, and beat Austin Cindric by 0.565 seconds for his 34th career Cup win (NASCAR official results).
How it was won
Practice and qualifying were rained out Saturday, so the field lined up by the rule book. Larson started second and passed polesitter Joey Logano early, then swept both stages and set the fastest lap. That added up to the maximum 76 points, the first time any driver has hit the maximum in a race this season (Hendrick Motorsports).
The one real threat came after the last green-flag pit cycle. Larson scraped the wall early in the final run, and Briscoe’s No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota ran him down and took the lead on Lap 238. Briscoe led 23 laps before his car got loose. Larson dove to the inside on Lap 261 to retake the lead for good (SpeedwayMedia). Briscoe then brushed the wall and slipped to fourth as Cindric and Denny Hamlin went by.
Larson said it felt easier chasing than leading. Once Briscoe was in front, Larson could see the No. 19 getting loose, and he finally made the pass stick.
