Buying Guides · Financing and Credit

The lender’s decision is often the fastest part. A complete application can get an answer the same day, sometimes within an hour or two. What usually stretches the wait is everything around that decision: a missing pay stub, a proof-of-address mismatch, or a car that hasn’t been picked yet.

Below is the process broken into stages, with what happens at each one and what tends to slow it down.

Stage 1: You Pick a Car (or Decide Not To Yet)

Lenders approve a loan against a specific vehicle. The year, mileage and price all affect the terms. You can apply first and choose later, but the final numbers aren’t locked until there’s a car on the paperwork.

Typical time: as long as you like. Browsing our inventory online first saves a trip.

Stage 2: The Application (15 to 20 Minutes)

Our online finance application is a short step-by-step form. It asks for the vehicle you want (or “no preference”), your down payment, your identity details, housing, income and employment.

What slows this stage down:

  • Not knowing your monthly rent or mortgage amount
  • Not having employer contact details handy
  • Self-employed income with no deposit history ready to show

Stage 3: Credit Review and Lender Decision (Often Same Day)

Once the application is in, it goes to the lenders we work with. They pull credit and decide. During business hours, the answer often comes back the same day.

To see if you’re in range before you apply, our guidelines are a credit score that’s typically 575 or higher, no repossessions in the last two to three years, and steady income of at least $2,500 a month on deposits or a paystub. Those are guidelines, not promises. The lender makes the final call.

Worried about several credit checks? The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says auto-loan inquiries made within a 14 to 45 day window are generally counted as one inquiry.

Stage 4: Stipulations, the Step Nobody Mentions

An approval often comes with conditions, called “stips.” These are documents the lender wants before funding. Common ones:

Stip What usually satisfies it
Proof of income Recent pay stubs or bank statements showing deposits
Proof of residence A utility bill or lease in your name at your current address
Valid ID A current driver’s license
Insurance Proof of coverage on the car you’re buying
References Names and phone numbers, if the lender asks

This is where a same-day deal turns into a three-day deal. Bringing these with you is the single biggest time saver. Our guide to documents you need to buy a used car in Texas has the full list.

Stage 5: Signing and Keys (Usually Under a Day)

With stips cleared, you sign the contract and the buyer’s paperwork. Closing is usually short. On our lot, you can typically expect it to take less than a day. Texas dealers handle the title and registration filing for you, so you don’t need a separate trip to the county tax office.

Whether you leave in the car that day depends on insurance being in place. See can I drive a used car home the same day I buy it for what has to be true first.

A Realistic Timeline

  • Best case: application in the morning, approval before lunch, stips in hand, keys by evening.
  • Common case: apply one day, bring missing documents the next, drive home on day two.
  • Slow case: income is hard to verify or the first lender passes, and it takes most of a week.

A Worked Example: One Buyer, Start to Finish

Here’s how a typical weekday purchase can go when the buyer comes prepared.

  • Monday, 9:15 AM. Ana browses the inventory online, shortlists two SUVs and fills out the finance application in about 15 minutes. She picks one SUV and notes the other as a backup.
  • Monday, 11:30 AM. A lender comes back with an approval and two stips: proof of income and proof of residence.
  • Monday, 12:00 PM. Ana emails photos of two recent pay stubs. Her utility bill is in her roommate’s name, so it doesn’t count.
  • Monday, 4:00 PM. She finds her lease, which has her name and current address, and sends it over. The stips clear.
  • Tuesday, 10:00 AM. Her insurance agent emails proof of coverage on the SUV’s VIN. Ana signs, gets the keys and drives home.

Total: about a day. The utility bill cost her the afternoon. Had she brought the lease first, she might have driven home Monday.

What Can Add Days

Situation Why it slows things What helps
Self-employed income Lenders want a history of deposits, not one month Three to six months of bank statements
New job Some lenders want to see time on the job An offer letter plus your first pay stub
Recent move Your ID and bills don’t match A lease or utility bill at the new address
Thin credit file Fewer data points for the lender A larger down payment or a cosigner
Weekend application Some lender staff work reduced hours Apply Friday morning or early in the week
First lender declines The application has to go to another lender Have backup vehicles in mind

Texas Paperwork That Happens at Closing

You’ll sign more than the loan contract. In Texas, expect:

  • A retail installment contract. It shows the amount financed, APR, finance charge and total of payments. Federal Truth in Lending rules require those figures to be disclosed before you sign.
  • Form 130-U, Application for Texas Title and/or Registration. The dealer files it with the county for you.
  • The FTC Buyers Guide. It shows whether the car is sold as-is or with a warranty.
  • An odometer disclosure, required for most used vehicle transfers.

Read the APR and the total of payments before you sign. If either doesn’t match what you were told, ask before you sign, not after.

A Note on “Instant Approval”

Online ads that promise instant approval, or say approval is certain, are making a marketing claim, not describing how lending works. A real approval depends on your credit, your income and the car you choose. Any lender can still ask for documents before it funds the loan. Plan for the stips stage and you won’t be surprised.

Checklist: Bring These

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Two most recent pay stubs, or three to six months of bank statements if self-employed
  • Proof of residence in your name: a utility bill, lease or mortgage statement
  • Your insurance agent’s phone number, or a quote already started on the VIN
  • Down payment method: debit card, cashier’s check or proof of transfer
  • Trade-in title or payoff information, if you’re trading in

How to Land on the Fast End

  1. Choose two or three cars you’d be happy with, so a lender’s counteroffer doesn’t send you back to square one.
  2. Gather two recent pay stubs, a utility bill and your license before you apply.
  3. Call your insurance agent ahead of time so they can bind coverage with one phone call.
  4. Apply early on a weekday, when lenders are fully staffed.
