What to check on a used Sportage
The generation you'll see most
The fourth-generation Sportage (2017–2022) is the one most often for sale around Houston. It's quieter and roomier than the 2011–2016 model, with a usable cargo area behind the rear seat. Kia launched an all-new, larger Sportage for 2023, so 2017–2022 is the sweet spot for value.
Engines
Most trims (LX, EX and the 2020+ S and Nightfall) use the 2.4L GDI four-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic. The SX Turbo uses a 2.0L turbo. Most commuters are happy with the 2.4L; the turbo suits buyers who want quicker merging onto I-45.
The 2.4L GDI: ask for the paperwork
The 2.4L GDI shares its engine family with other Kia and Hyundai models that had connecting-rod bearing recalls and a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update. Coverage depends on the exact VIN, so don't assume either way. Before you buy:
- Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and on Kia's owner site.
- Ask a Kia dealer which campaigns or software updates apply to that VIN, and whether they were done.
- Ask for oil-change receipts. Steady oil history matters more on this engine than most.
FWD or AWD?
FWD is lighter and simpler. AWD helps on wet, slick roads in Gulf Coast downpours, but it doesn't make an SUV safe in standing water. No drivetrain does. If you take AWD, check the fluid service history in the owner's manual schedule.
Test-drive checklist
- Cold start: no ticking or knocking after the first few seconds.
- Smooth 6-speed shifts pulling away from lights on FM 518 and Hwy 3.
- AC blowing cold at idle in the afternoon heat.
- Panoramic sunroof (EX and SX): check the headliner for water stains from clogged drains.
- Backup camera, Bluetooth and the power liftgate where equipped.
Trims
LX is the basic model. EX adds leather and nicer features and is the best value for most buyers. SX/SX Turbo adds the most equipment.

FAQ
Questions buyers ask
Is a used Kia Sportage a good first SUV?
It can be. It's compact, easy to park and fuel-friendly. Choose one with records showing recall work and regular oil changes.
Does the Sportage have a third row?
No. It seats five. For a third row, look at the Sorento.
Should I get AWD on a Sportage in League City?
FWD works for most local driving. AWD adds grip in heavy rain, but never drive into flooded roads in any vehicle.
Do you finance used Sportages?
Yes, through outside lenders. Our financing guideline is typically 575+ credit; every application is reviewed individually.
