Buying Guides · SUVs

Count the car seats first. A family with one toddler and a family with three kids in boosters need very different SUVs. Most “best family SUV” lists bury that difference under a ranking. So this guide sorts the best used SUVs for families in Houston by how many seats you fill on a normal Tuesday, then gives you the generation and drivetrain details for each pick, plus a 20-minute fit test to do before any test drive.

Texas law shapes this choice more than people expect. Children under 8 must ride in a car seat or booster unless they’re taller than 4’9″ (Texas Transportation Code §545.412). In practice, that keeps a lot of Houston families running two or three boosters well into elementary school.

One or two car seats: a two-row compact SUV

Honda CR-V. The 5th generation (2017–2022) used a 1.5L turbo four-cylinder with a CVT on most trims. A CR-V Hybrid joined the lineup for 2020. The rear doors open wide and the rear floor is nearly flat, which helps when you’re leaning in to buckle a rear-facing seat. What I’d check: oil level and condition on the 1.5L turbo, plus a smooth CVT pull from a stop.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. The 5th-generation RAV4 Hybrid (2019 on) pairs a 2.5L engine with electric motors and standard electric all-wheel drive. EPA combined ratings are in the high 30s to about 40 mpg, depending on year and trim; check fueleconomy.gov for the exact vehicle. That matters if your week includes a Beltway 8 or I-45 commute. What I’d check: have a shop with hybrid experience scan the hybrid system, and confirm the hybrid battery’s cooling-air intake under the rear seat isn’t blocked by pet hair or crumbs.

Subaru Forester. Every Forester has full-time all-wheel drive. Since 2014 most have used a CVT, and the tall glass gives you the best outward view in this group. What I’d check: all four tires should be the same brand, model and wear level, because mismatched tires can strain an all-wheel-drive system. Have the CVT fluid history checked.

If your budget is the deciding factor, all three come in older model years that are easier to afford. Just make sure the maintenance records are there. On these SUVs, condition matters more than model year.

Three car seats, or regular carpool duty: a three-row SUV

Toyota Highlander. The 3rd generation (2014–2019) uses a 3.5L V6 on most trims. The 4th generation (2020 on) adds a widely available hybrid. The third row works best for kids, and some trims have second-row captain’s chairs, so confirm which one you’re getting: a bench (8 seats) or captain’s chairs (7). What I’d check: whether a third-row passenger can get in with car seats already installed in the second row.

Honda Pilot. The 3rd generation (2016–2022) uses a 3.5L V6. Depending on year and trim it has a 6-speed or 9-speed automatic, so drive it in stop-and-go traffic and pay attention to low-speed shift quality. What I’d check: both rows of rear climate controls and the power tailgate.

Chevrolet Suburban or Tahoe. If you need adult-sized third-row room and towing capacity, a body-on-frame Chevy plays in a different league. The 5.3L V8 has its own checklist, so read our used Chevrolet Suburban guide before you shop one.

What about a Grand Cherokee or a used Mercedes GLE? Both can work for a family of four, but a three-row version is rare in the years most buyers shop: the three-row Grand Cherokee L arrived for 2021, and the GLE’s optional third row came with its 2020 redesign. Repair costs on luxury SUVs also run higher, so get a specialist inspection and a written estimate.

The 20-minute fit test (do this before the test drive)

Bring the real gear. Photos can’t tell you if your stroller fits.

  1. Install every car seat you use, in the positions you’ll actually use them. Use LATCH or the seat belt, whichever your car-seat manual calls for. Then move the front seats to where your tallest driver sits.
  2. Buckle a booster rider in the middle. Middle-seat belt buckles tend to get buried under car seats on either side.
  3. Load the stroller, with every seat you need upright. Folded-seat cargo numbers answer a different question.
  4. Climb into the third row without uninstalling anything (three-row SUVs only).
  5. Start the engine and run the rear A/C for five minutes with the doors closed. On a Houston August afternoon the back row heats up first.

TxDOT offers free car-seat checks through LoveMyCarSeat.org if you want a technician to confirm the install in the SUV you choose.

Houston-specific checks

  • Flood history. A clean title isn’t proof against water damage. Enter the VIN at NICB VINCheck (no charge). Pull back the carpet under the rear seat and look for silt. Check the seat-mounting bolts for rust.
  • Hail and sun. Look across the roof at an angle in daylight for hail dents. Check the dashboard and rear-deck trim for heat cracking.
  • Recalls. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask for proof of completed recall repairs. Seat, airbag and seat-belt recalls matter more in a family vehicle than anywhere else.

Before you commit

Get an independent inspection on whichever SUV wins the fit test, and get repair estimates in writing. The vehicles we sell from 521 State Hwy 3 have clean titles, and you’re always free to have one inspected. Any loan comes from an outside lender, not from us. We’re not a buy-here-pay-here dealer, and lenders set their own terms, so read them separately. If credit is the sticking point, our bad-credit buying guide covers it. Parent questions

CR-V or Pilot for two kids?

CR-V, unless you regularly carry a third child or grandparents. If two car seats fit with room to spare, a two-row SUV is easier to park and cheaper to run.

Does the RAV4 Hybrid have a third row?

No. It’s a two-row SUV.

Is all-wheel drive worth it in Houston?

It helps on wet boat ramps, grassy lots and slick roads, but it doesn’t make floodwater safe. If you buy AWD, keep matched tires on it.

How do I know a seat has 7 or 8 positions?

Count the seat belts and check the door-jamb placard and the window sticker. Don’t rely on the listing title.
