Buying Guides · Financing and Credit

Yes, once the money is in your account. A refund on the way isn’t a down payment yet, and a refund in hand doesn’t mean the loan will be approved. The lender still decides whether to finance the rest and on what terms. The smart move is to split the refund before you shop. Part goes to the costs of buying, part to a cushion, and whatever’s left is your down payment.

When the refund will actually arrive

The IRS says it issues most refunds in fewer than 21 days, and direct deposit is the fastest route. Paper refund checks are being phased out, so most filers now need to give a bank account. Two timing rules catch people off guard:

  • EITC and ACTC refunds are held until mid-February. Under the PATH Act, the IRS can’t issue any refund on a return claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February. The hold covers the entire refund, not just the credit. For early 2026 filers, the IRS said most of those refunds would be in bank accounts by March 2.
  • “Where’s My Refund?” updates once a day, usually overnight, so checking more often won’t speed anything up.

Shop while you wait, but don’t sign an agreement that counts on a refund you haven’t received. If someone offers to lend against your expected refund, that’s a separate loan with its own costs. Read it separately from the car contract.

Split the refund into three buckets

Bucket 1: costs at signing. These are due when you buy, whatever the down payment is. In Texas:

Cost Amount
Motor vehicle sales tax 6.25% of the sales price (on a $12,000 car, $750)
Title application fee $33 in Galveston, Harris and other emissions counties
Yearly registration in Galveston County, typical car or pickup About $76.75
Dealer metal plate fee $10

Our guide to Texas title transfer and registration breaks each fee down.

Bucket 2: the first 90 days. Insurance on the new car (lenders usually require full coverage on a financed vehicle), a fuel buffer, and money for whatever the inspection flagged, such as tires, brakes or a battery. Rent, utilities and overdue bills come out before any of this. That money was never down-payment money.

Bucket 3: the down payment. What’s left goes toward the car. A bigger down payment shrinks the loan, but not if it leaves you with nothing when the check-engine light comes on in month two.

All, part or none of it

Choice Fits if Trade-off
Put all of it down Your savings already cover household needs and the first-90-day bucket Borrow the least. No refund cash left over.
Put part of it down You need cash for insurance, registration or a known repair A larger loan, but a cushion that keeps the car on the road
Hold it and keep shopping The refund hasn’t arrived, the car has unanswered questions, or the terms don’t fit your regular income More time to inspect and compare. Doesn’t solve an urgent need for a car.

Size the payment to your regular take-home pay, not the refund. Next year’s refund, overtime or a raise you hope for shouldn’t be what makes the car affordable.

The refund doesn’t change the lender’s decision

A down payment lowers what you ask to borrow. It doesn’t erase late payments or replace income you can document. If your credit is rough, ask whether any offer is conditional and what verification is still outstanding. Then compare offers on the same car with the same down payment. Otherwise a different deal can look like a better loan.

Testarossa Motors is a dealer, not a lender, and there’s no buy-here-pay-here arrangement. Financing goes through outside lenders, typically 575+ credit, and approval is never guaranteed. We don’t earn anything from financing or warranties. Our bad-credit car buying guide walks through the lender’s side in more detail.

When you compare loans, ask for a written breakdown of the price, any optional products and the amount financed. Check whether removing an add-on lowers the amount financed. Look for prepayment terms. If the car, the down payment or the loan structure changes at the desk, redo your budget before you sign.

Inspect before the refund leaves your account

Cash is easy to spend and hard to get back. Before you hand any of it over:

  • Have an independent mechanic inspect the car. Tell them about anything you noticed on the test drive, such as warning lights, noises, leaks or rough shifts. An inspection informs your decision. It isn’t a promise against future failures.
  • Treat clean title and good mechanical condition as two separate checks. One doesn’t prove the other.
  • Get a written estimate for any known repair on that specific car, and confirm it fits in bucket 2.

Worn seats can be a fair trade at the right price. An engine problem nobody can explain is a reason to keep the refund in the bank. Across 18,000-plus vehicles purchased for our lot since 1995, that’s the line we’ve used: accept wear you understand, and pass on risk you can’t afford. If a truck is what you need, compare used trucks for sale in Houston first.

Refund-season questions

Can I put my refund down before it arrives if the dealer holds the car?

Holding a car and committing your refund are different things. Don’t sign a purchase agreement that depends on money that hasn’t arrived.

Is it smarter to pay off a credit card with the refund instead?

It can be. Lowering high-interest debt can help your credit profile and your monthly budget. Run both scenarios against your real income before deciding.

Does a bigger down payment get me a lower rate?

Not automatically. It lowers the amount financed. The lender sets the rate based on the whole application, so compare actual written offers.
