I’m Deborah at Testarossa Motors in League City. When a lender approves a car loan, the approval often comes with “stips.” That just means the lender wants proof of a few things before the loan is final.
What “stips” means
Stipulations are conditions on a loan approval. Usually that means documents proving what you put on the application: who you are, where you live, and what you earn.
Common stipulations
- Proof of income: recent pay stubs, or bank statements / tax returns if self-employed
- Proof of residence: a utility bill or lease in your name
- Valid driver’s license
- Proof of full-coverage insurance
- References: names and phone numbers
- Down payment
- Sometimes a phone bill, bank statement, or employment verification call
Why lenders ask for them
Lenders verify the application before funding. Stips are normal; they don’t mean you’re in trouble.
How to get through stips faster
Bring the documents with you. Make sure your name and address match on everything. Use our documents checklist so you can finish in one visit.
What if you can’t meet a stip?
Tell us. Sometimes another document works, or a bigger down payment changes things. We work with select lenders, and the lender makes the final decision.
FAQ
